Julius Ogunro, in the winning entry for Environmental Reporting of this year’s DAME, titled The Curse of Oil, captured the dangers enveloping the city of Warri in the hands of the “demons that possessed it since 1997”.
The once bubbling, oil-rich city of Warri in Delta State is likened to the West Bank in the Middle East. No thanks to the seemingly unending violence among the communities on the one hand and with the oil companies on the other.
Published in Insider Weekly of August 30, 2004, the story juxtaposed the amount of wealth the nation is reaping from the land with its underdeveloped state worsened by insecurity, poverty and warfare.
Julius Ogunro was born on July 8, 1976 and attended the Delta state University for his B. A. in Mass Communication. He graduated in 2001 with Upper Division, and was adjudged the best graduating student of the department for the year.
A first timer on the DAME roll of honour, Ogunro started as a reporter with Shipping World newspaper in 1999 as an intern and started mainstream journalism with the Insider Weekly in 2003.
