Alhaji Lateef Jakande was a formidable name in the effort to professionalise and organise the Nigerian media into a respected industry. He was the founding president of both the Nigerian Guild of Editors in 1961 and 1962 respectively. Earlier, he had served as a treasurer of the Nigeria Union of Journalists. As a past president of the International Press Institute, he was also the brain behind the Nigerian Institute of Journalism. After discharging sterling duties to the Nigerian media, Alhaji Lateef Jakande (1929-2021) went on to render commendable service as the first civilian governor of Lagos State (1979-1983), and as a federal minister for works and housing under General Sani Abacha.
